HALLOWEENY SPOOKTACULAR & NANOWRIMO PREP
BRIAN LETENDRE is back on the show to talk about favorite horror stories and being a writer of that genre. He’s part of a horror writing and book club called The Midnight Society, midnightsocietytales.com (I love that instead of staff bios they have obituaries).
Brian shares his love of John Carpenter, Clive Barker, Stephen King and the best of the worst 80’s horror movies. From The Twilight Zone to Scooby-Doo, there’s much to reminisce about.
I looked at GoodReads list of Best Horror Novels and other than Dracula, the other top 4 are all Stephen King.
There’s also a supplementary list Best Horror Books by People Other Than Stephen King:
- Dracula by Bram Stoker
- The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty
- I Am Legend and Other Stories by Richard Matheson
- The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
- Ghost Story by Peter Straub
- Number 10 on this list is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
I popped down to Best Ghost Stories:
- The Shining by Stephen King
- The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
- A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
- Ghost Story by Peter Straub
- Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill
Craig from Twitter said his favorites are The Exorcist, The Amityville Horror, and Salem’s Lot.
Female Authors Psychology Thrillers and Suspense (aka Books Amber Will Probably Never Ever Read Ever) – basically dominated by Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Dark Places, Sharp Objects); others in the top 5, The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins; and Into the Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes.

COMICS TO CONSIDER:
Being a fan of kids’ comics, I like quirky things like GHOUL SCOUTS, LUMBERJANES, and usually anything that has cryptozoology. Also with a new dark edge is the miniseries by Dynamite, NANCY DREW & THE HARDY BOYS: THE BIG LIE by Anthony Del Col and Werther Dell’Edera. THE HARCOURT LEGACY is another new book about the supernatural.
Just out is a new comic from Oni Press called SPECTACLE by Megan Rose Gedris. It’s wonderful. Twins named Anna and Kat work for a traveling circus. Anna fakes her fortune telling skills while Kat is a bonafide knife thrower. Unlike most twin stories, these two do not get along. Kat is murdered and jumps into Anna’s body and the two of them in one body want to solve the crime. It’s not “horror†but it does have a circus and a murder so I think it’s ok to call spooky.

There is also a new GOOSEBUMPS comic called “Download and Die†coming out on Oct 25 by Jen Vaughn and Michelle Wong through IDW. However if you want the crap scared out of you in a YA Slasher comic, get THE CIRCLE from Action Lab Entertainment by Damon Clark and Alyzia Zherno.
