JESSE PARRINO 06-JULY-2014 I’d like to preface this review by saying it’s in honor of CJ Henderson. A staple of Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Gaming Conventions. You will be missed.
DEXCON. It’s a con I have some trouble reviewing because they have a system that works so they don’t change it much. But there were some changes this year worth mentioning. This year they had a subtle gender identity inclusion in place with name tags that have preferred pronouns and opting to change some of the hotel rest rooms to unisex. They didn’t advertise this they just did it. This deserves praise.
As I said the con didn’t change much. I did the normal amount of tabletop gaming and LARPs. But what really stole the show was the Pacific Rim LARPÂ that was run by http://www.nerdycity.com. They had a whole section closed off and the point of the LARP was to be all about immersion. The hallways were cluttered with posters and warnings. They went so far to do this in the rest rooms. They had a lounge. They even set up a miniature city and had people in suits to be a kaiju and a jager. I got to speak to some of the players after the game and they were all equally impressed. I found out about it a little too late so I couldn’t play. But they were kind enough to let me see the sets before the players came in. It just made me jealous as hell that I couldn’t get in.
Other then that I did notice the artist alley is starting to expand. There were about 12 booths all with different art styles taking commissions all con. I took a few business cards and intend to do business with a few of them in the coming year. There sadly isn’t really much more to say that I didn’t say when I reviewed Dreamation and Dexcon last year. It’s a show that once you go once you know exactly what you’re getting. An old school gamer nerd fest…..while creating a safe space for all ages.
