Today will be such a fun episode. SHANNON WHEELER was here 4 years ago and he’s back today to talk about his new book “Sh*t My President Says: The Illustrated Tweets of Donald J. Trump”. Soft release is July 4th and then full launch in August from Top Shelf.
Clearly, not a day goes by that Trump isn’t saying or tweeting something stupid, arrogant, or insulting. The book was a living document with new tweets replacing some old ones until they had to firmly send it to print.
Shannon and I went through a few hot topics of the Trump Administration: his contradictions, healthcare, golfing, evading questions, and the propagation of myths that have been debunked.
Is there a limit to free speech? Is it better to know when someone is a racist/phobic upfront without filters?
At first, when his friend made the suggestion to illustrate the tweets, it ignited a fresh spark of creativity. Shannon admits he started having nightmares going through all Trump’s tweets to decide which ones to include in the book.
“When I start thinking about the impact and the reality of it, that’s when it’s really depressing — where I think, hey this guy has genuine responsibility, the world is looking at us, we’re the leading power, and this is representative of the United States. And it’s kind of embarrassing. That’s when I got depressed.” Shannon Wheeler on Trump’s tweets
Shannon wonders if there’s a missing spirituality component to famous people like Trump. Could something have happened to their souls? Are his tweets a cry for help? Theories of all kinds abound.
We discussed the cultural differences from east coast to west coast. Shannon, in California, said people downplay their success and don’t like to talk about accomplishments. Real estate and gentrification included.
*Minor correction: Where I stated Craig Yoe was the artist fired from DC Comics who made Superman and Lois Lane into porn, what I was trying to recall was Yoe’s book, Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman’s Co-Creator Joe Shuster, about the Superman co-creator.
