PRESS RELEASE: The next Superheroes For Hospice sale is set. As a reminder this is a fundraising effort for Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center.

The sale will be on Saturday, April 21, 2012 (from 10am to 5pm) at 95 Old Short Hills Road, West Orange, NJ 07052–directly across the street from Saint Barnabas Medical Center.

We will have over 300 long comic book boxes filled with every kind of comic style possible. We also have a ton of graphic novels and there will be some action figures and trading cards.

In conjunction with this sale we are hosting the first, “Get Into Comics” lecture series. During the sale there will be the following three, approximately one hour, presentations:

  • My Comic Book Life by Arlen Schumer – (11 a.m. to noon) – From thumbnail sketches to finished artwork, you’ll be inspired by how Arlen turned a childhood love of comic books into an adult livelihood as a comic book historian and illustrator for over 25 years!
  • How to Create a Comic Book Character by Rick Parker – (12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.) – This is a fun, “hands-on” experience for kids of all ages. You do not have to be an artist to participate.
  • Why Superheroes Matter: Modern Mythology from Comics to Films by Hannah Means-Shannon, PhD. – (1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.) – Superheroes intrigue and inspire us because of their enduring universal qualities drawn from ancient traditions. This lecture will delve into three hero types present in Greek, Irish, and Norse mythology, and explore the ways in which they have come to influence and energize superheroes in various comics and films including Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America.

There is no admission fee for either the sale or this lecture series, however, registration is required to participate in the lecture series, as seating is limited. To register, please email your interest (i.e. what talk do you want to see) to SBallas@BarnabasHealth.org.
