Ashley Neuhaus 29-AUG-2012 This week, the final issue of DEADWORLD: WAR OF THE DEAD from IDW Publishing is released. As I’ve said in a previous review, this was my first introduction to the DEADWORLD universe and all its characters. It was also my first time with its creative team as well. One thing that this series had going for it that is different than any of the other zombie stories I’ve read or watched is that there’s a definite power struggle between the humans and zombies. It can be argued that there’s always that struggle but what Reed has done is given some of the control to the zombies, or rather one zombie in charge of the rest. It’s been strange and awesome to read a story where a zombie is fighting for HIS survival and what he’s doing to keep his army alive, so to speak.

Writer: Gary Reed
Artist: Sami Makkonen

I’ll be honest, this didn’t feel like a final issue in a mini series but then again, there may be plans for more DEADWORLD in the future. Even if there is going to be more, I am still left feeling incomplete after this issue. Some of the characters’ stories have been wrapped up but others are still on a journey.

As it was in previous issues, I felt confused during some conversations. And again, that may have something to do with Makkonen’s art. Most of the men look the same to me with the exception of Dan and his long jacket. Even the women look the same: tiny shorts, bikini top and long hair. Combine those things with the blue-scale and brown-scale coloring of scenes, it got very mixed for me at times. I know I’ve said this in previous reviews regarding this series but it felt even more apparent this issue because there’s a lot going on. Things are supposed to be coming to some sort of conclusion but when I can’t figure distinguish between characters, it’s hard to know what’s getting resolved.

After issue four, I had my thoughts on how things between King Zombie and Donna would play out. While I wasn’t exactly right on the means, the end was still the same. Reed created a nice little story with this series but one question that is still left unanswered, what the hell is with Deake?! Maybe if there’s more DEADWORLD in the future, that question will get answered.
