Today I finally got back into modeling since moving home to New Jersey. I needed a break and it was worth it. Modeling for two of the figure drawing classes at the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art was a huge honor for me. As I explained in this previous blog post, I once had my sights set on Kubert’s for my own education. Sure, it was absent the drinking and boisterous contests of Dr. Sketchy’s but it’s for the greater good of art, helping to teach the new generation about the shape of a human figure.

There was a morning class; then a break, ending with the afternoon class. The instructor Joel was exceptionally nice as well as profoundly talented. Even just sitting there and trying to be a good prop for the students, I learned quite a bit from his guidance and lecture. They were just beginning to study anatomy and had focused on the pelvic girdle as the human body’s foundation. Hearing all the anatomical terms which were once second nature for me, kept popping off friendly reminders in my brain from when I knew the body inside and out. It’s true, if you don’t use it, you lose it. I had forgotten about epicondyles and the greater trochanter until his lecture reminded me. Luckily for me, I booked two more dates in October to work there again.

If you are at all curious about the world of comic book art and even commercial art, you should try to get to the Open House scheduled for October 16,2010.
