VODKA O’CLOCK WITH KATE:

Kate Kosturski joins me in a completely nerdy episode talking about comics, TV, movies, and conventions. Kate is a librarian by day and geek blogger by night for Multiversity and volunteer for Geeks Out!, the geek LGBTQIA community organization.

For Multiversity, Kate heads the social media management. She said they have a goal to cover more than Marvel and DC Comics. Kate is a huge fan of Black Mask Studios and Boom! Studios. She recommends Boom’s series Fence by C.S. Pacat (writer), Johanna the Mad (artist), Joana Lafuente (colorist).

We discussed the need for authentic voices in comic book storytelling. Raising marginalized voices is the mission for Geeks Out!, hosts of Flame Con in New York City.

Conventions:

Kate gets to several comic conventions a year to cover the shows as press or as a volunteer. She loves seeing cosplayers and their commitment to creativity on display. Cons are loud, crowded, and sometimes unbearable; this segues into why there will be Geek Yoga hosted by Amber Love at Garden State Comic Fest.

Recomendations:

  • Jupiter Jet
  • Raven the Pirate Princess
  • Hungry Ghosts
  • Ice Cream Man
