featurebanner_jeremyholt3AMBER LOVE 21-NOV-2013 As always it’s such a pleasure to welcome comic writer JEREMY HOLT back to VODKA O’CLOCK. He brings us up to date on the AFTER HOUDINI series, his new one-shot with Chris Peterson called PULP, and his part of the Dynamite Comics anthology PATHFINDER: GOBLINS.

Download on iTunes, Stitcher, or listen here.

pulpcover-peterson jeremy holtJeremy talks about the lesson learned from trying to sell comics that only had a first issue out and there was no answer for when the next issue would be coming out. He decided to get into telling short stories as part of one-shots and anthologies. The one-shot became PULP, his co-created story with the incredibly talented Chris Peterson. Chris’ schedule had made getting the book challenging but he pulled out all the stops and in three or four days had it ready for New York Comic Con. Preview pages of PULP are available on Chris’ website. PULP is set up as a “tip jar” payment – you pay what you want to download the digital file and if that’s zero, so be it, but you’ll realize from the quality seen in the preview pages that this story is worth a good tip.

We get into a nice comfortable discussion about the writing process and what creators prefer in their environments. There’s a stereotype about writers being isolated in a cabin in the woods with no distractions. Now that might be just what you need. On the other hand, some prefer the bustle and energy of coffee shops.

“I make sure that the characters are interesting ‘cause I’m spending time with them and if I’m not interested in the characters then who’s gonna want to read the story. And that’s what can help me when I’m sitting down to write is that I’m gonna spend the next eight hours alone.” ~JH

Balancing home life with writing, Jeremy learned that he had to work at the consideration of others. Now, he needs to take into account his fiancée’s needs which does not include him working into the wee hours. His process not only includes isolation from distractions but also outlining.

If you’re interested in our reading recommendations, we ran through quite a list including: BEDLAM, SACRIFICE, SAGA, PRETTY DEADLY, THE END OF THE FUCKING WORLD, MIXTAPE, JACK HAMMER, DOC UNKNOWN, DEATH SENTENCE, VELVET, SHELTERED, TWISTED DARK, TABATHA, SANCTUARY, and of course LONE RANGER.

Upcoming conventions mentioned: VA Comic Con, Jersey Comic Con, Wicked Faire & Voltaire’s Necrocomiccon
