featurebanner_jeremyholt_interviewAMBER LOVE 17-JAN-2012 Today’s episode of Vodka O’Clock features comic book writer, columnist and podcaster JEREMY HOLT. He discussed how his choice of artist, Selena Goulding, on COBBLE HILL determined a drastic change in the book’s direction.

cobblehil_coverCOBBLE HILL was reviewed by me a while ago and Jeremy’s other comic SOUTHERN DOG was reviewed by Ashley. There is a ton of interesting writing process details discussed in this episode which makes perfect sense since Jeremy hosts a podcast called The Process. He tells what questions come to mind in determining whether to make up a city or to use a real geographic location and the pitfalls of either choice. The struggles and challenges of crafting a world for a YA audience when Jeremy feels it’s more natural for him to write graphic violence.

Part of why Jeremy is successful with YA is because of his personal experiences growing up as an adopted Asian man. His family is very diverse. He’s one of triplets (Korean) and has a younger sister (Chinese) who is also adopted plus two siblings from his father’s previous marriage. It’s a particularly crucial metaphor in SOUTHERN DOG.  He attributes his strongest writing influence on his mother who was gifted with telling great stories.

We even parlay from indie chat to talking a little about BATMAN because it was Frank Miller’s work that brought Jeremy back into the comic reading world.

Every time you’re not writing someone else has your dream job.

As far as mainstream news, the day we recorded was also the day the Court of Appeals sided with Warner Brothers in the SUPERMAN litigation. Other news hit that day where Y: THE LAST MAN would be made into a feature length movie. Y creator Brian K. Vaughan is also someone who left Jeremy starstruck.
